The Cheltenham Challenge - Course Information |
The Swim Course (see map below, marked in YELLOW) starts from Devonport’s Narrow Neck Beach, rounds Takapuna Head, lays across Cheltenham Beach and lands at Balmain Reserve.
The swim is approximately 2km in length, and is timed to ensure tides are favourable for the majority of the course.
Swim Course – Narrow Neck to Balmain Reserve

The Run Course (see map below, marked in RED) leaves from Balmain Reserve, travels along scenic Cheltenham Beach, up the Stairs-of-Pain familiar to many local Devonport athletes, and over North Head, down North Head into the leafy sea-side streets of Devonport, finishing back in Balmain Reserve some 5km later.
The run is approximately 5km in length.
Run Course – Balmain Reserve to Balmain Reserve (NOTE: may change slightly on the day).

Safety for swimmers: A full escort flotilla for on-water safety, observers on Takapuna Head, and First Aid onshore will be provided.
Safety for runners: Course marshalls, drink stations, and First Aid will be provided.
